A Wild Church InDeed - Jay-Z/Kanye West 'No Church in The Wild'

Jay-Z, & Kanye West, have quietly released a not so quiet video for their song ‘No Church in the Wild’, from their collaborative effort ‘Watch the Throne’, released in August of 2011.

When I say a quiet video release, for a not so quiet song, I mean to say this video is explosive, literally; the song ain’t so bad either, having been already productively placed in the movie trailers for the Denzel Washington/Ryan Reynolds film Safe House, which will be out on Blu-Ray & DVD, June 5th. The song itself is a monster of a Hip-hop record, with political/spiritual statements, from Jay-Z, and lusty lavish lines from Kanye West. With a hook that asks ultimately, ‘who are you’ (‘Human Beings in a Mob. What’s a Mob to a King? What’s a King to a God, What’s a God to a Non-Believer?)… hence the title ‘No Church in The Wild’.

When I say that this video is explosive you have to see it to understand my full meaning, but let me do my best to explain… Molotov cocktails, police in full riot gear, protestors flipping the bird to authority figures, lasers, beat downs (on both sides), fire, religious symbols; basically out-n-out anarchy, and guess what?! No Jay-Z. No Kanye West. Yup, that’s right, Jay-Z & Kanye West, are arguably two, of the most recognizable figures in present day Hop-Hip, and they don’t even appear in their own video. ’No Church in The Wild’ could be a home video from last year’s political dissents, known as the Arab Spring, but only if it were shot by a top notch music video director like Romain Gavras. Gavras also shot the video for M.I.A’s Bad Girls’, which is another good video this time from a politically infused Hip-Hop artist, known for being explosive, and known for making statements; being pregnant and perfoming at the Grammy’s come to mind, ain’t no body got swagger like M.I.A.

I like how Jay-Z, & Kanye West choose not to occupy their own video, which is clearly fueled by the Occupy Movement; maybe it’s a statement, probably not. In the end it doesn’t matter, all that matters is that they keep giving us good music, to occupy our time, and good visuals, to occupy, our minds… check it out.
