Bunheads Cast Two New Characters To Diversify CastBunheads: New Characters—Sibling Dancers to Diversify Season 1 Cast

Two Brand new characters are going to be introduced in the 2nd half of Bunheads‘ premiere season, which will return in early 2013 to ABC Family. The roles will be recurring guest-starring roles — roles that could become regulars. Here’s an excerpt from TV Line, which gives a description of the two characters:

Maggie is described as a bright, quirky 15- to 17-year-old who has an “indie Winona Ryder” vibe about her. Jack is around the same age and also is an individualist; both characters do their own thing and spend a lot of time in each other’s company. Though there’s no word yet on whether they will practice their pliés at the Paradise Dance Academy, the show is looking for actors with ballet experience.

Interesting to note: The fact that Bunheads wants to fill the parts with actors of color may be in response to observations – made most notably by Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes via Twitter – that the predominantly white cast needed some diversifying. At the time, the always frank Bunheads creator and executive producer Amy Sherman-Palladino said, “I don’t do message shows. I don’t give a s—t who you learn your life from.”

Bunheads was a bit of a flop for ABC Family, it hasn’t gained the cult following that Pretty Little Liars has. The Ratings were completely average. About 1.64 million viewers tuned in every week. Interestingly enough, the show received fairly positive critical response. Of course the critical response has to be put into perspective. ABC family shows, while entertaining, they aren’t going to be taking home any Golden Globes or Primetime Emmy Awards. I think this is a good move by ABC Family though, bring in some new blood and spice it up. The show still has some promise.
