Box Office Returns

Box Office Returns: Resident Evil Back at #1, Finding Nemo 3D is Swimmingly at #2, The Possession has a solid 3rd Week.

It was an interesting, if not mostly predictable weekend at the box office. Alice and her ass kicking ways drove Resident Evil Retribution to number the number one spot. Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich did it again, this is the third straight Resident Evil film to open #1. My Guess? They’ll do it for a 6th time. The film had an ultra wide release, in 3012 theaters across America. Sony has to be happy, becasue the film which cost $65 million dollars to make has already made $71 million dollars world wide.

Finding Nemo 3D finished in second place and I don’t understand why. Okay, I do understand why, little kids drive the animated box office numbers, but hasn’t every kid and adult seen this movie at least twice over the last decade? Anyway, no hate here, Disney did a good job promoting this film and now Pixar knows that every animated film they have ever made can be re-released in 3D and finish in the top three at the box office.

The Master, Paul Thomas Anderson brilliant new film set a record this weekend too. No, it didn’t finish in the top ten, because it was in super select theater release, but every show was sold out.  The film did $145k per theaters. If you don’t really understand box office talk, that is a record and f’ing outrageously good. The good news? Based on that solid performance, The Master will be put into 800 theaters next weekend according to the Weintstein’s.

The Possession. Lawless, the The Expendables rounded out the top 5. The Possession has made $41 million dollars over 3 weeks, Lawless has made $30 million in three weeks and The Expendables 2 has made $80 million dollars over 5 weeks. That’s a bit of a disappointment for Lionsgate, surely most thought The Expendables 2 would reach the $100 million dollar domestic threshold.
