Broken Trailer starring Tim Roth and Cillian MurphyFans of Cillian Murphy and Tim Roth? yea, me too. Now the two come together in Rufus Norris’, ‘Broken.’

The Mark O’Rowe written film is based on the novel by Mark O’Rowe. The Film centers on 11-year-old diabetic Skunk (Eloise Laurence) who is facing a lot of changes in her life. Her stepmom, Kasia (Zana Marjanovic), is dating Mike (Cillian Murphy) who also happens to be Skunk’s schoolteacher, though her father Archie (Tim Roth) still stops by almost every night. Skunk is starting a relationship with her first boyfriend, is being threatened by a mean-spirited neighbor, and there is even more drama happening outside her orbit, with a few plot threads that will wind up connecting in the end. Lost? I am too? But we do have the trailer below, so hopefully that will give you a clue.

The film premiered at Cannes and wasn’t received incredibly well. The Playlist wrote, ”Tonally, the film is all over the place, ranging from heavy drama to broad comedy, and while that, in theory, could work in the hands of the right director, Norris doesn’t have the nuance or subtlety to pull it off.”

That’s one reviewers take. I try never get to swayed one way or another by critics, but the lack of buzz for this film is a little alarming. I hadn’t heard of it until about a week ago. Still, I love the talent in Broken, and that will get me in the theater, or in front of my TV when the film hits VOD. It will be released in France on August 22, 2012, but a U.S. distributor has yet to be found.
