If you love Baz Luhrmann films like I do, you know everything he puts on screen is fashionable and detailed.
From the exquisite hand crafted guns in Romeo and Juliet, to the magnificent dancing gowns in Strictly Ballroom. In fact, Strictly Ballroom won the AFI Award for Best Achievement in Costume Design in 1992. Everything Baz Luhrmann directs has color and it flashes off the screen, tantalizing the eyes even though you know the clothes in his films aren’t for you, but for the characters in his larger than life, over the top films.
His films are defiantly no stranger to great clothes. In 2001, his film, Moulin Rouge won the ultimate prize in costume design, as Catherine Martin and Angus Strathie took home Oscar gold for best costume design. Well, Catherine Martin and Baz Baz Luhrmann have teamed up again for ‘The Great Gatsby,’ and as you can imagine, the costume design is special and accurate of the times.
The Great Gatsby’s recent trailer revealed how the forthcoming film’s costumes pay tribute to the Roaring Twenties and advertisements from the era for Brooks Brothers, the official men’s clothier to the film, have revealed just how historically accurate the outfits are.
In The Great Gatsby, Designers at Brooks Brothers created ‘authentic re-creations of Twenties wardrobes’ according to WWD. More than 500 day and evening ensembles were created on top of the 1,700 additional wardrobe items which included neck wear, accessories and shoes, for the 3D film’s cast and crew. Simply amazing. The coolest part? The writer of The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald, was in fact a Brooks Brothers customer himself during the era.
Catherine Martin said, ’It was this most basic and fundamental connection that has made our collaboration so authentic. Brooks Brothers is mentioned several times in Fitzgerald’s writings as a representation of the ultimate gentleman’s purveyor of fine clothing to the American man of distinction.’ She added, ’[Brooks Brothers] also defined the collegiate style – the preppy look – which was so close to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s heart. It seemed the obvious partner to work on the creation of the men’s wardrobe.’ I for one can’t wait to see it all on the screen and in 3D.
