Dallas Season 2, Saying Goodbye to Larry Hagman
Dallas began in 1978 with a five part mini-series on ABC that had the Ewing clan breaking all the rules and showing us what sibling rivalry is all about. The show ran for 14 seasons and 357 episodes.
The most notable cliffhangers at the time were “Who Shot J.R.?” and of course the inimitable death and return of Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy). For those of you who are too young to remember, Patrick Duffy left the show; Bobby Ewing died after being run over by a car. He was gone for an entire season and then the cliffhanger; his wife comes home to find him in the shower. The next season explained that the entire 1985-1986 season had been a dream. Unfortunately for Dallas, and all of Larry Hagman’s friends, family and fans the death of J.R. will be final.
TNT rebooted the original series and brought us all back to Southfork with Dallas 2012, on June 13th, 2012. It has been an immediate and resounding success with an average of 4.5 million viewers per week in its freshman year.
Here’s and inside look at how Dallas will say goodbye to J.R. from Inside TV’s Karen Valby on January 4th, 2013:
At the time of Larry Hagman’s unexpected death on November 23, the Dallas team had five episodes of their sophomore season in the can that feature everybody’s favorite scamp J.R. Ewing. So after that most terrible surprise, executive producer Cynthia Cidre was tasked not just with mourning the loss of a television giant and friend, but also dramatically changing course on the fly. She had at her disposal an extra scene shot of Hagman that had been cut from an earlier episode and will now be inserted in episode 6. And then over three days she hand wrote episode 7, which will start exploring J.R.’s absence. “I never cried when I was writing,” says Cidre. “But the next day I started to type, and I started crying so hard I couldn’t even see the computer screen.”
The eighth episode of the season, slated to air March 11, will pay tribute to Hagman with a funeral episode for J.R. Joining the Ewing clan will be plenty of familiar faces from the original Dallas who will help honor an unforgettable man. “It will be funny and appropriate to J.R., but it will also be sad because his family loved him,” says Cidre. “As do the fans.”
Dallas returns with 2×01, ‘Battle Lines,’ on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 9pm on TNT.
