Denzel Washington Will Star In Sony’s Pictures The Equalizer

Denzel Washington The EqualizerThe Man is coming back to the big screen. Not that Denzel Washington ever really takes a break from filmmaking, and to prove it, he has been confirmed as The Equalizer in Sony’s Pictures film adaptation of the 1980′s TV series of the same name. Meanwhile, Washington is coming off this years ‘Safe House,’ and will next be seen starring in Robert Zemeckis’ ‘Flight’ and he is currently shooting ’2 Guns’ with Mark Wahlberg. Wow, that’s a steady diet of work at $15 million dollars a picture.

The original ‘The Equalizer’ series was played by Edward Woodward as a mysterious former covert operations officer who helps people in trouble. writes, ‘This new film adaptation has that basic premise but takes off in its own way. Washington’s character is described as a solitary, monastic figure who hates injustice and devotes himself to helping people who are being victimized.’

It sounds a lot like Person of Interest, does it not? I am a child of the 80′s or rather, a baby of the 80′s and so I don’t think I’ve ever seen an episode of The Equalizer. I will be seeking it out now that Denzel has signed on to star in the picture though.

The film was penned by Richard Wenk and Sony liked it enough to push for April 2013 principle photography in Boston. Who’ll direct? Deadline lists a studio wishlist featuring attention-getting names such as Pierre Morel (Taken), Nicolas Winding Refn (DriveBronson), Gavin O’Connor (Warrior) and Gareth Evans (The Raid).

It shouldn’t be hard to find a good man or woman to helm this film now that Denzel is attached. Denzel Washington‘s name on the top of a movie poster almost guarantees a hit and hits allow directors to push for their own pet projects that might otherwise never see the light of day. Stay tune for co-stars and the director.
