How I Met Your MotherF.R.I.E.N.D.S. vs. How I Met Your Mother Comparison: A look at the similarities and differences between the characters of these two hit shows.

The hit-television series F.R.I.E.N.D.S started in 1994 and is still playing syndicated re-runs to this day. When the show ended in 2004 I had only seen the last season of Ross’s whit and Phoebe’s extreme sense of humor. After the final ride to the coffee shop during the tenth season I decided I had to learn how the lives of six individuals consistently intertwined for 10 years; I also wanted to learn how Joey got all those women.

I watched re-run episodes of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. for the next four years until I had seen every episode…. twice. I was convinced after that that there would never be another F.R.I.E.N.D.S. There would never be a group of actors that were so in sync that the show seemed like a reality. And then it was born. How I Met Your Mother

How do F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and How I Met Your Mother Compare?

In 2005, the new sitcom How I Met Your Mother was introduced on CBS. Now in my opinion, How I Met Your Mother did not capture the hearts of many right off the bat. For me, I wasn’t ready to give it a chance because I didn’t want to cheat on my F.R.I.E.N.D.S. But then I was forced to open up to the idea because well, what kind of critic would I be if I didn’t

How I Met Your Mother is set in New York City and has a dynamic group of people involved together. (I am not sure what it is about New York but they make it look like it is way easier to stay friends there than anywhere else). The voiceover narration by Bob Sage adds such comedic relief to every scene in the show. The audience not only sees the relationships in the show but they can hear what the future Ted is thinking about those relationships; it’s like getting the inside scoop.

In How I Met Your Mother Ted Mosbey’s (Josh Radnor) mannerism and personality resembles Ross Geller (David Schwimmer) in F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Both are leaders in the group and are hopeless romantics. Barney Stinson’s, (Neil Patrick Harris), character is a very close cousin to Joey Tribianni’s (Matt Leblanc) character. Both men are charming, handsome and have one desire when it comes to women. Some describe them as womanizer’s and I think it’s safe to say that some are right.

How I Met Your MotherThe difference is Barney’s demeanor is very suit and tie while Joey is very jeans and a t-shirt. Once we get into season 8 of F.R.I.E.N.D.S Joey’s clothing style begins to get significantly more mature. I say it’s because Joey said the phrase “I Love You” for the first time to Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and meant it. In comparison, Barney fell for Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), which transformed him as a man. Well, the truth is, when Barney and Robin broke up he went back to his old ways but during their relationship, the audience really got to see and be a part of Barney’s vulnerability.

Then you get to Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel) who uses humor and awkward stories to relieve a situation, just like Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), Both men are married to women that are poise and collected and motherly, which in contrast their characters are obedient, sweet, and lightly push-over husbands. Like I alluded to earlier. Both women were very witty and corky, but down-to earth and put together.

I know you are wondering, who represents the famous Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow)? But honestly, I don’t think there is a Phoebe and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Phoebe was such a unique character who gracefully filled each episode with a surprise. When it comes to comparing her, I am not so sure it is possible. Well, folks there you have it. Two amazing shows, two amazing concepts and two amazing casts. How I Met Your Mother is still going strong in its seasons, I’ll see you when it hits the ten-year mark.
