First Image of Matt Damon in Neill Blomkamp’s, ‘Elysium.’

Here is the first official image of Matt Damon in Neill Blomkamp’s, ‘Elysium.’ (You can see one of the dozen leaked set images to the left) EW dropped the first official look at Matt Damon in the movie on the 4th of July, and he’s bald, with a kind of half-robotic arm and wielding a big gun, it’s certainly an intriguing first look.

After three years of anticipation and rumors swirling around District 9 directors Neill Blomkamp’s next project, we learned last year he would be making this film, Elysium.

Blomkamp has left all his fans in the preverbal dark . Details of Elysium had been kept under warps and chained tiger with lock and key until a week ago. Then Collider managed to get the first synopsis from Elysium:

ELYSIUM is a futuristic thriller from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, starring MATT DAMON and JODIE FOSTER. In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard the government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

I think, think, Neill Blomkamp may be the next great science fiction director, but you can’t judge a filmmaker off one film. Even a film as unique and in a way, masterful as District 9. Turning what could have been a ho-hum, low-budget alien invasion movie into a stirring and occasionally heartbreaking action drama, was enough to earn itself a Best Picture nomination and Blomkamp plenty of fans — Including me, and from where I’m sitting, this picture of Matt Damon says a thousand words to me, the most important being, originality — The word I think of first, when I hear the name Neill Blomkamp. I have never seen a live action solider with a semi-bionic arm (Have I?).
