FIRST LOOK: Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs

Written by Alexander Tucker   // 05/14/2012

Ashton Kutcher as Steve JobsHe certainly looks the part! Here is the first look at Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs.

I have always respected Ashton Kutcher the man. I haven’t always respected his work, but he takes risks in Hollywood. I respect that. He was one of the first to jump into reality TV head first with Punk’d and has gone on to produce 18 other TV shows and movies.  He was an important cog in ‘That 70′s Show’ and agreed to stay on for an 8th season out of financial pity for his other cast mates as Topher Grace exited screen right. And he had the guts to take over for the infamous Charlie Sheen in ‘Two and a Half Men’.

Not all of the above have been great chooses, but I respect Ashton Kutcher for sticking his nose in there and playing the game. Woody Allen famously said, “80% of success is showing up’ and Ashton has never had any trouble doing that.

So here he is again, this time Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs. And all the while I’m wondering if Ashton’s performance will get a fair shake. Somehow I doubt it. Unless Ashton puts up a performance for the ages, this film, which is currently in-between titles, will be mocked and criticized by half the public.

First off, Steve Jobs is an icon and gained a loving, almost cult like following. When it comes to fanatics, no one will ever be as good as the original and so they will ask, “Why try?” Second, accounts of Steve Jobs personality have varied. Proving the man was three or even four dimensional and I doubt Kutcher will play him that way. When you only have an hour and forty five minutes to tell a story, it’s almost impossible to fully explore such a complex personality like Jobs. Third, Kutcher hasn’t done himself many favors in the dramatic department. The truth is, he’s looked at as a goofball. Fair or unfair, that’s the way he’s perceived. And because Jobs was such a serious person, many are saying, a goofball like Ashton Kutcher can never do Steve Jobs justice.

You can’t deny the resemblance though. In the pictures below Ashton even seems to have the Steve Jobs walk down pat. The jeans, the shoes, watch and black turtle neck scream Steve Jobs as well. Looking the part won’t get it done for Mr. Kutcher though. Personally I hope Kutcher uses this opportunity to change the direction of his career. He will be 35 next year and forty before the end of the decade and 40 year old goofballs are not cute. If not for his sake, then for the sake of Steve Jobs legacy. Because if Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs doesn’t work out, I doubt Hollywood will go down that rabbit hole again for ten or fifteen years.

The Social Network was great and silicon valley and the tech industry has so many great stories to be told. It’s a key part of American history as well and I’d love it if the film industry and even TV industry gravitated towards the telling of some of the best tech age stories. For that to happen, I think a film like this has to be successful.

  • The film has two working titles, “Jobs” and “Jobs: Get Inspired”
  • Josh Gad will play Steve Wozniak.
  • Matt Whiteley penned the script and Joshua Michael Stern is directing.
  • The film is in pre-production.
