UPDATE: (SATURDAY-SUNDAY) It looks like the prognosticators had this weekend pegged by Friday night. Madagascar 3 is going to cruise to an easy win. In fact the animated Dream Works film will be the only movie this weekend to crack the $30 million dollar mark – $35 million dollars to be exact..
Deadline reports a studio source said of this disappointing summer, “One movie this summer has made any money (The Avengers). And a number have lost a fortune.” That may be a little over stated as Men in Black 3, Prometheus, and Snow White performed pretty well, but I get the sources point. This summer, it has been The Avengers and everyone else.
Though, I look for ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ to charge hard out of the gates, July 3rd, and surpass MIB: 3, and Snow White, to take the number two summer box office spot. We will have to wait and see, but Spider-Man sells to the old, young, male, and female. It’s a great franchise. I have to admit, I was skeptical of a Spider-Man reboot, so soon after Tobey Maguire’s trilogy, but I find myself drinking the kool aid now. I can’t wait to see it.
Anyway the top ten didn’t change throughout the weekend, only the numbers ticked up in some cases and down in others. Take a look at the top ten below.
FRIDAY: Back to reality. Animation is cleaning up at the box office and is on it’s way to an easy victory. Madagascar 3 grossed an estimated $9 million dollars on Friday night and is projected to go on to bank $33.5 million dollars over the weekend.
Meanwhile, Prometheus, though down 72% from last Friday, is holding its own by grossing $6 million dollars on Friday. Having speculators projecting a $20.5 million dollar haul for the Ridley Scott Science fiction epic.
Wasn’t I the guy who said Tom Cruise, and Rock of Ages, could pull off a shocker this weekend? Yes, that was me and that was me being completely out of touch. What I didn’t foresee was the all the terrible reviews. Those reviews killed this film Friday morning and by the time people were off work and headed to the movies, word of caught up with the public and those mouths were saying, “Wait for the BluRay.’ Rock of Ages only grossed $5.5 million Dollars on Friday and will be lucky to top $15 million dollar over the weekend.
That’s My Boy continued Adam Sandler’s cold streak. It’s bombing worse than Rock of Ages. Pour Adam Samberg. Looks like he picked the wrong post SNL debut. It pulled in $5 million dollars on Friday and in projected to do under $14 million over the weekend. Snow White and The Huntsman, Men in Black 3, and The Avengers fill out the top seven.
