Friday Box Office Returns

Box Ofice Returns

SUNDAY UPDATE: The Expendables 2 has Adjusted down again to $28.8 million dollars. That means the film has now come up $6 million dollars short of the originals Expendables release. That doesn’t bode well for an Expendables 3.

SUNDAY MORNING UPDATE: The Expendables 2 is still #1 and it’s not even close. The action epic did adjusted down from Fridays original earnings report, but will finish the weekend on top with a solid $30 million dollars, give or take half a mil.

The Bourne Legacy performed strong under the circumstances and managed to finish the weekend in 2nd place. The film will gross $16.8 million dollars this weekend. Why strong? Well, its an action film that went head to head with The Expendables 2, while a new Anima and a chick flick in Sparkle came out. Many Hollywood insiders thought The Bourne Legacy would finish 3rd behind ParaNorman if not 4th behind Sparkle.

ParaNorman actually had some what of a disastrous weekend. The Focus Features 3D Anima finished the weekend in 4th place, about a million dollars behind Sparkle. The Focus Features film will gross only $13.4 million dollars this weekend, while Sparkle will gross $14 million dollars. What makes it even worse for ParaNorman, they opened in 3,429 theaters and Sparkle opened in more than a thousand less, 2,244 theaters.

SATURDAY UPDATE: As predicted, The Expendables 2 is running away with the Box Office crown this weekend. The action movie filled with “A-list Action” stars has almost doubled up its competition on Friday. The film grossed $11.5 million dollars and got good reviews, because The Expendables 2, is what it is, and even critics can appreciate that.

In a bit of a surprise to most Box Office projectors, The Bourne Legacy stood relatively strong on Friday by taking in $5.4 million Dollars — making The Bourne Legacy the #2 film on Friday, beating out newcomer ParaNorman.

ParaNorman also got very good review and the Focus Features film was supposed to finish a strong 2nd to The Expendables 2, but we can see that’s not going to happen. The film made only $5.3 million dollars in 3,429 theaters. Worse for Focus and ParaNorman, the trending numbers are suggesting that ParaNorman won’t make up ground on Saturday and could finish 3rd or even a disastrous  4th behind Sparkle.

Specking of Sparkle, the Sony film starring the late Whitney Houston, is holding it’s own. It pulled in $5 million dollars on Friday and is projected to leap frog ParaNorman and take the number 3 spot. It the film does finish in 3rd, you can call this film a success for Sony Pictures.

The Campaign will  finish 5th and it feel a hefty  -53% in only its second week in the Box Office. Word of mouth did nothing for the Will Farrell Comedy. On Friday The Campaign managed just $4.3 million dollars. Ouch.
