Gerard Butler Not Playing for Keeps? L.A. Times Pans Film

Written by Alexander Tucker   // 12/07/2012

Playing for KeepsPlaying for Keeps is apparently not Playing for Keeps at all.

The L.A. Times has panned this movie before it Premiers this weekend, saying the latest Gerard Butler flick is another loser. Ironically Gerard Butler is playing a winner  turned loser who has finally decided to try to win back his ex; maybe it’s the whole premise then. We’ve seen it all before with Matthew  McConaughey and Kate Hudson and just about any romantic comedy these days. How many times is the American movie goer gonna buy that ticket? No wonder the cast, crew and Director can’t make this work. It’s not for lack of trying, Butler’s longer hair with the golden curls just don’t fit him; maybe they tried too hard to make him into a Scottish McConaughey.

According to Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times Film Critic, that’s not all that goes wrong with Playing for Keeps.

Directed by Gabriele Muccino (“The Pursuit of Happyness”) and written by Robbie Fox, there is a story here, but more than anything else “Playing for Keeps” is out to score a feel-good moment in every single scene — no exaggeration.

The worst part of this film’s numbers may not be the critics, part of the problem is in the competition. Playing for Keeps may have done alright at the box office if it had premiered at any other time of the year. Competing with the likes of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn part 2, Skyfall and Lincoln, the romantic comedy Playing for Keeps perhaps should not be playing at all. The competition will get even worse in the coming weeks with the much awaited Lord of the Rings prequel “The Hobbit”  entering play on December 14th and “Les Miserables” on Christmas Day. Playing for Keeps will need a miracle to win this game… Hail Mary anyone?

Playing for Keeps starring Gerard Butler and Jessica Biel premiers in theaters December 7th, 2012.
