‘Ghostbusters 3′ Hires Ethan Cohen For Rewrites

Ghostbusters 3I’m almost getting sick of reporting this Ghostbusters 3 news, but there has been a significant development in the films progress. Ethan Cohen has been hired for rewrites. It seems, twenty three years after Ghostbusters II left fans feeling largely disappointed, Sony simply refuses to let the long rumored third installment in the franchise go.

Now, this isn’t the first time Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis have teased us with accomplished writers. Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg (The Office, Year One) were hired to write the screenplay back in 2008.

Still, the main thing holding Ghostbusters 3 back is Bill Murray, who was rumored to have hated the screenplay. The actor revealed on the Late Show with David Letterman last month that he was hesitant about signing on for the sequel, but he also said in April that it was a possibility.

Can Cohen be the guy who gets Murray to show up on set? The writer is probably best known for “Tropic Thunder,” and he’s got a number of brewing scripts around town and it should be noted this movie will find the original Ghostbusters passing on the torch to a new generation, so if Cohen can reduce Peter Venkman to a sideplayer who makes a few quips, trains some guys and then disappears, perhaps Murray will be interested enough to strap on the proton pack for one last go.

Etan Cohen’s other credits include Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Men in Black 3 & IdiocracyGhostbusters 3 is in development and has Sigourney Weaver, Anna Faris, Eliza Dushku, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Annie Potts, Ernie Hudson all attached. The film would be directed by Ivan Reitman.
