A new HBO Documentary will cover the life of Chris Crocker, the creator of the infamous “Leave Britney Alone” YouTube mega hit.
You have all probably seen the “Leave Britney Alone” video that became viral almost overnight on YouTube. The video was made in response to the criticisms that were dished out after Britney Spears’ 2007 comeback appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards. Chris Crocker begged everyone to just leave Britney alone. To Date the “Leave Britney Alone” video has had over 43 million hits. Combined, Chris Crocker has had over 253 million views on his YouTube videos.
Chris Crocker is known for his effeminate nature and his dramatic acting skills. His videos have attracted haters and lovers alike because of his flamboyantly gay presentation in the videos. Chris Crocker was born to teenage parents in East Tennessee, and ended up being raised by his grandparents. Many of the YouTube videos that he created were made at his grandparent’s home. In fact his grandmother inadvertently appears in some of these videos.
Being gay and effeminate in a small, Bible-belt town led to Chris Crocker having to face continuous harassment and bullying. He was made fun of for bringing Barbie dolls to school. Chris ended up having to be home schooled because the harassment wouldn’t stop. He once stated, “the only gay pride parade where I live is in my bedroom.”
In August 2011 Chris Crocker announced that he was making a documentary video about his life, and asked his fans for funding. In less than a month he received more than enough funding for the documentary, “Me at the Zoo” (now shortened to “Me @ The Zoo”). The video was a success at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, and has now been picked up by HBO. The documentary, “Me @ The Zoo” will premiere on Monday, June 25, 2012. The documentary will show how the YouTube megahit “Leave Britney Alone” affected Chris Crocker’s life, among other things.
Interesting Fact – Chris Crocker created a YouTube video called “Watch Chris Crocker Blink.” It is 5 seconds in length and shows him smiling and blinking two times. This single video has had over 8 million hits to date! What does this say about our culture? Or, as Chris Crocker would say, what does 8 million views for a 5 second video say about the “allure of the creator”?
I’m looking forward to watching this documentary, how about you?
