carlina whiteLifetime TV has greenlighted ‘Abducted: The Carlina White Story’ to premiere later this year.

Lifetime Television will be premiering ‘Abducted: The Carlina White Story’ on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 8/7 C, a film based on the remarkable real life story of Carlina White, the infant who was abducted from a New York hospital in August 1987. Amazingly Carlina White solved her own kidnapping and was reunited with her parents 23 years after being taken from her biological parents, Joy White and Carl Tyson.

On August 4, 1987 worried parents brought their feverish 9 day old baby, Carlina White, to a Harlem Hospital to be checked out. A woman by the name of Ann Pettway had been hanging around the hospital for weeks disguised as a nurse. Pettway had undergone a series of miscarriages and desperately wanted a baby of her own. Pettway, disguised as a nurse, pretended to care for baby Carlina. When the family wasn’t looking Pettway removed Carlina White’s IV line and stuck her in a duffle bag.

Baby Carlina White was taken to Bridgeport, Connecticut, and later to Atlanta, Georgia where she was given the new name Njedra Nance. Njedra had no idea that her real family was in New York and that she had been abducted from a New York Hospital when she was 9 days old.

Distraught Parents of Carlina White

Meanwhile Carlina White’s biological parents never gave up hope to find their kidnapped daughter and a $10,000 reward was offered for the safe return of baby Carlina. The family won a $750,000 lawsuit against the city and set up a trust fund for Carlina White.

Njedra Nance (formerly Carlina White) started to grow suspicious about her family when she entered her teen years. She noticed that she did not resemble the people that she was living with, and was also unable to obtain a driver’s license. She had no paperwork, no birth certificate, and no social security card.

Carlina White/Njedra Nance started to explore the website of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Carlina found a baby that looked like her and called the hotline number to let them know that she did not know who she really was. After being reunited with her real family in January 2011, Carlina White stated, “”I’m so happy. At the same time, it’s a funny feeling because everything’s brand new. It’s like being born again.” Her mother explained her initial feelings after finding Carlina, “”I’m sitting here and I’m in a daze, thinking, ‘Is this for real?’ I missed the last 23 years of her life. I have to take it all in, for now just take it day by day,” said White.

Film production of ‘Abducted: The Carlina White Story’ will commence in Vancouver later this week with a slate of stars including Aunjanue Ellis (The Help), Keke Palmer (True Jackson, VP), and Sherri Shepherd (30 Rock, The View). ‘Abducted: The Carlina White Story’ will be produced by Pilgrim Studios, known for the film ‘Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial.’

Tune in to Lifetime for Abducted: The Carlina White Story on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 8/7 C.
