“Steel Magnolias” was originally written as a comedy-drama play by Robert Harling. “Steel Magnolias” was based on the true life experiences that Harling went through after losing his younger sister, a diabetic. Harling’s friends suggested that he write about his feelings following the death of his sister. He began writing a short story, but soon realized that the story would be better told through a full length play. Robert Harling wanted the audience to experience what his family went through when his sister was in the hospital, including the humor that his family used to cope with the difficult situation.

The film won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Dramatic Motion Picture in 1990. Julia Roberts won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture.

The story revolves around Truvy’s Beauty Parlor in a small parish in Louisiana. The tight knit group of friends experience humor and heartbreak together. The main story lines revolves around Shelby, her mother, and the medical battles, although the story also focuses on the friendships between the six ladies within the beauty salong. Robert Harling came up with the title because the females in the film are, “as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel.”
