LIFETIME RECEIVES FIVE 2012 EMMY AWARD NOMINATIONS
Project Runway Nominated for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program
LOS ANGELES (July 19, 2012) – This morning Lifetime received a total of five 2012 Emmy® Award nominations, including four nods for its hit unscripted series Project Runway, which was nominated for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. Hosted by Heidi Klum and set to return for its milestone 10th Anniversary tonight at 9:00pm ET/PT, the hit unscripted series was also nominated for Outstanding Cinematography for Reality Programming, Outstanding Directing for Nonfiction Programming and Outstanding Picture Editing for Reality Programming.
In addition, the network’s original movie Five, the critically-acclaimed anthology of five short films exploring the impact of breast cancer on people’s lives directed by Jennifer Aniston, Alicia Keys, Demi Moore, Patty Jenkins and Penelope Spheeris, was nominated for Outstanding Casting for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special.
Project Runway provides budding designers with an opportunity to launch their careers in fashion, under the watchful eyes of host Heidi Klum, mentor Tim Gunn and judges Michael Kors and Nina Garcia. After nine seasons,Project Runway remains the gold standard for design competition series on television. Season nine opened with the largest number of designers ever, who were shocked to discover there was one more cut before they made it officially on the show. 20 designers had to impress Heidi, Tim, Nina and Michael enough that they had what it took to be on Project Runway, and four went home even before the competition kicked off. One of the designers who made the cut was Anya, a self-taught former beauty queen from Trinidad who had only learned to sew just a few months prior. Despite her lack of training and experience, her aesthetic earned Heidi’s endorsement – despite the concerns of her fellow judges – and Anya not only made it onto the show, but proved she was a designer to be reckoned when she was ultimately named the winner of the 9th season. Season nine of Project Runway was 2011’s #1 competitive unscripted program on ad-supported cable among Women. Project Runway is produced by The Weinstein Company, Bunim-Murray Productions and Full Picture. Season nine executive producers included Bob and Harvey Weinstein, Meryl Poster and Barbara Schneeweiss of The Weinstein Company, Jon Murray and Sara Rea of Bunim-Murray Productions, Heidi Klum, and Jane Cha Cutler and Desiree Gruber of Full Picture Entertainment, and Lifetime’s Rob Sharenow, Gena McCarthy and David Hillman.
Honored earlier this year with a Television Academy Honors award and from executive producers Aniston, Marta Kauffman, Paula Wagner, Kristin Hahn, Kevin Chinoy and Francesca Silvestri, Five featured an all-star ensemble cast that includes Patricia Clarkson, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Rosario Dawson, Lyndsy Fonseca, Ava Acres, Ginnifer Goodwin, Josh Holloway, Taylor Kinney, Jenifer Lewis, Jennifer Morrison, Kathy Najimy, Bob Newhart, Annie Potts, Tracee Ellis Ross, Tony Shalhoub and Jeffrey Tambor. With an interconnected story arc, Five uses humor and drama to focus on the effect breast cancer has on relationships and the way women perceive themselves while searching for strength, comfort, medical breakthroughs and, ultimately, a cure. The film highlights the shared experience each short film’s title character – “Charlotte” (Goodwin), “Mia” (Clarkson), “Lili” (Dawson), “Cheyanne” (Fonseca) and “Pearl” (Tripplehorn) – endures from the moment of diagnosis. Each storyline is tied together by chronologically featuring “Pearl,” beginning as a confused child (Acres) bravely facing the loss of her mother (Goodwin) to breast cancer in 1969 to her adult life today as a mother and oncologist treating other patients (Fonseca, Dawson and Clarkson) before she herself is diagnosed with, and ultimately beats, the same disease that took her mother. Five was written by Stephen Godchaux, Jill Gordon, Howard Morris, Deirdre O’Connor and Wendy West, and produced by Sony Pictures Television, Echo Films, Chestnut Ridge Productions and Freestyle Picture Company.
