Moonrise Kingdom Movie Review: 10/10 and Oscar Worthy!
Taking place on a New England island, Wes Anderson’s latest film, “Moonrise Kingdom“, is about two young lovers, Sam (Jared Gilman) and Suzy (Kara Hayward), who run away from their town to be together. A few citizens of the not-so-concerned town go on a search for the young couple. Among those in the search party are Police Captain Sharp (Bruce Willis), Boy Scout Master Ward (Edward Norton), and a group of boys in his troop.
If only one of my reviews convinces you to go and see a movie, I sincerely hope it’s this one. Moonrise Kingdom is truly one of the best films I have ever seen. I was completely enchanted by what I was watching on screen. It is a delight-filled, humorous, and carefree movie.
The completely original screenplay was written by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola, who also co-wrote “The Darjeeling Limited”. The writing makes the movie feel like a fairy-tale, or a bedtime story played out on screen. If this doesn’t win the Academy Award for best original screenplay, I will be shocked, as it completely deserves it.
Along with co-writing, Wes Anderson also directed the film. I don’t know how he did it, but somehow he made the two young stars of the movie, who were both making their acting debut, shine like they had all the experience in the world. If anyone other than Anderson directed this, I highly doubt we would get the same result from the actors.
So with Anderson’s help, Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward, gave the best performance of their careers. Okay, so the only performance of their careers, but that’s besides the point. The chemistry they had was phenomenal. Throughout the entire movie, I found myself really wishing that their characters could be together.
I really think Moonrise Kingdom has a good shot at winning the Oscar for Best Picture. Hopefully the movie reminds the Academy of being in their forties, since it takes place in the 1960s. Kidding aside, I really hope they recognize what a gem Wes Anderson has created.
If the closest theater that ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ is playing in is two hours away, it is completely worth the trip. What you will see is beautiful scenery, unbelievable acting, and a story more original than you have ever seen before. I don’t even hesitate giving this 10 out of 10. This is Wes Anderson’s best work, and so far, the best film of 2012.
