New Behind-The-Scenes Featurette of Prometheus, The Ship

PrometheusHere is a new behind-the-scenes featurette of Prometheus, the ship.

This is really fascinating stuff. In this video the filmmakers explain the ship from it’s imaginary conception. Starting with the fact that former Lost writer of the film, Damon Lindelof wanted the name of the film to be the name of the ship.

Production designer Arthur Max goes on to explain the entire conception of the ship. Claiming it to be a state of the art expedition flagship, not an interplanetary taxi — and making it look like an insect with a wrap around wind screen. The interior set is amazing as well. Theron, Fassbender, and Rapace all agree.

Listening to him, I’m wondering why GM doesn’t hire this guy. I still believe television and film has a lot to do with future technology. Creative minds dream these inventions up and men of science and engineering then build them.

All of this Prometheus talk sort of saddens me really. I hate that America has basically abandoned NASA for austerity. Space truly is the final frontier. Somewhere out there, there must be life or energy or precocious metals and compounds. Eventually the U.S. will be back in the green again, and NASA will be revived, but I’m afraid by the time we get to really exploring space, I will be long gone. And so films like Prometheus must suffice.

The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Charlize Theron.  It opens June 1, 2012 in the UK and June 8th in the United States. The film did cost $120m so I guess the brilliant set isn’t altogether surprising. It is nice to know though, that Ridley Scott has put the money to good use. But then, he always does. I watched Kingdom of Heaven again the other day and it was still a flawed film, but my god, the sets were truly spectacular. That’s Spectacular with a capital S, folks. The statement is not a platitude. Since Gladiator, Ridley Scott has always hired the very best in set design.
