Here’s the latest clip from Ridley Scott’s Sci-Fi epic “Prometheus”
I recently went through Ridley Scott’s filmography. Not just on IMDB, I went back and watched eight or nine of his films on top of the classics like Gladiator, Alien, and Blade Runner — films I’ve seen a dozen times throughout the years.
One thing I realized in doing that, was Ridley Scott is one of the top five filmmakers of his era and one of the twenty greatest of all time. Black Hawk Down is a marvel and films like A Good Year and White Squall are very good. Not to mention “Body of Lies”, one of the underrated films of last decade. It’s extremely complex storytelling and professionally made.
Since the year 2000 Ridley has worked non-stop compiling a list of fantastic films. I know it seems like an odd statement, but in my eyes, Ridley Scott really came to age with Gladiator at 61 years of age. Sure he made fine films before Gladiator, but I think Gladiator gave him the confidence that has led to this late career serge. Since then he’s directed 9 movies in 13 years with one in pre-production. Before Gladiator he directed 10 movies over 23 years.
I’ll never forget hearing Stanley Kubrick’s wife say her husbands biggest regret towards the end of his life was not directing more films. I think there’s something to that and I hope my favorite directors will heed that cautionary statement. A lot of fine directors work to infrequently. PT Anderson is a perfect example. Since Paul Thomas Directed “Hard Eight” in 1996, he’s only made five films and the fifth is still in post. During that stretch, Ridley Scott has almost tripled the young P.T. Anderson’s filmography.
Certainly, when it comes to film, quality is more important than quantity. I don’t deny that. However I think Woody Allen, Alfred Hitchcock and other directors legacies have benefited for making so many films and being consistent at their craft much like Ridley Scott has over the last ten, thirteen years.
I think Prometheus will be another feather is Ridley Scott’s South Shields, English hat. And it’s nice to know that even though Mr. Scott is 74, he has shown no signs of slowing down. In fact he just started pre-production on Cormac McCarthy’s new film The Counselor — with Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt attached.
“Prometheus” hits theaters on June 8th. The film starts Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Charlize Theron.
