For those of you who haven’t watched season 3, and have kept yourselves immune from all of the spoilers out there, the following news may come as a surprise, so warning, spoilers ahead. For the rest of you, plunge on into these uncharted waters.

Here’s the latest scoop on the Downton Abbey Series 4 casting news from TV Line’s Michael Ausiello, posted January 24th, 2013.

In Downton Abbey Series 4, Lady Mary Crawley will need a new Boyfriend:

Since Lady Mary wouldn’t be Lady Mary without a gentleman by her side, the show is looking for a (naturally!) handsome thirtysomething actor to come courting as Lord Anthony Gillingham.

From what we gather, her would-be suitor is not only a looker, he also has a winning personality. (So winning, in fact, that there’s already talk that he could return for Season 5!)

Abbey EP Gareth Neame told TVLine in a recent interview that [Dan] Steven’s exit created a “dramatic opportunity” for Michelle Dockery’s alter ego, adding, “In any relationship drama, the will-they-or-won’t-they is always more interesting than married couples. So actually what we’ve been able to do is reset [Lady Mary]. She has to start again, and that will be much more interesting.”

More in Downton Abbey News, from Bang Showbiz, posted January 24th, 2013:

Julian Fellowes has revealed there will be “tough times” for Lady Mary Crawley in Downton Abbey‘s fourth series.

The ITV show’s writer says the fourth installment of the period drama – which is to air later this year – will be a difficult one for Michelle Dockery’s alter-ego following the death of husband Matthew Crawley in the Christmas special.

Speaking at the National Television Awards at London’s The O2 last night (23.01.13) – where the show won the Best Drama prize – he told BANG Showbiz: “There are tough times for Lady Mary I think we can say that.”

While Julian refused to give much away about the fourth series, he is keen to see Shirley MacLaine reprise her role as Martha Levinson, the US mother of Lady Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern).

He added: “We were absolutely thrilled she was in the show but I don’t really know what is coming, but I’m sure she will come back. I never know what is happening in my own life let alone the show.”

Downton Abbey Season 3 episodes are  airing Sundays, Jan. 6-Feb. 17, 2013 on PBS. Episode 3×04 airs on Sunday, January 27th, 2013 at 9:00 pm ET and Central. The Upcoming Series 4 is still to be announced for the UK.
