New Image From Del Toro’s Pacific Rim Features Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi

Pacific RimEntertainment Weekly, ShockTillUDrop has provided us with our first peak at Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi in Guillermo del Toro’s (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) eagerly-awaited sci-fi adventure ’Pacific Rim.’ Oh, and by the way, it has been confirmed, Guillermo del Toro, a longstanding fixture in San Diego, is set to return, but this time with a brand new film, his first since 2008′s “Hellboy II: The Golden Army.”

So far, the images from the flick have focused on the space-suited heroes (take a look at Idris Elba right here), but nothing yet of the monsters they face and we’d guess del Toro will be keeping those under wraps as long as humanly possible.

The film will be released, July 12, 2013. Its about, and get ready, a legion of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju. They start rising from the sea and begin a war that would takes millions of lives and consumes humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse. I know, a lot to take in.

I’m not sure how this film was shot, but to me it looks heavily infused with CGI. I’m don’t know if this is just a promo picture, or what the film will actually look like or a combination of both. Will it have an Avatar feeling or will it be more set driven like Hellboy? We will have to wait and see, either way, Sci-Fi and Del Toro together sounds good to me.
