Here are some new images from ‘The Dark Knight Rises‘ producers. The film is two months away, but already it’s being compared to The Avengers. It’s as if people are suggesting ‘The Dark Knight Rises‘ has to make as much money as ‘The Avengers’ to be considered a success. In my eyes that couldn’t be further from the truth.
I understand The Dark Knight Rises is at the top of the curve and will be graded tough. Plus it’s predecessor The Dark Knight was such a classic and it broke through that one billion dollar glass ceiling. But money isn’t the only measure of a films success. Don’t get me wrong, money is important and TDKR will be extremely profitable. Don’t worry about that. But to suggest this film will be a disappointment because it can’t catch up with The Avengers or its predecessor is ludicrous. The Avengers is going to be the third highest grossing film in history. The Dark Knight Rises has no chance of matching that.
Personally I don’t think The Dark Knight Rises will break the billion dollar mark. So the comparisons to The Avengers are moot. The two films are based off comic books yes, but that and good special effects is all they have in common. One film is taylor made for families and the other one is phycological and shadowy.
And don’t forget the circumstances surrounding The Dark Knight’s billion dollar box office mark. Not only did that film showcase an iconic villain in The Joker, but the young actor who brilliantly portrayed him passed away in the months leading up to the films release. There was a whirlwind surrounding TDK and still, it only broke the billion dollar mark by 1.921 million dollars. Meanwhile Batman Begins only made $372m. Proving Batman on his own isn’t the be all end all at the box office.
I think TDKR will find it’s self somewhere in the middle of the first and second films by the great Christopher Nolan. Grossing somewhere in the $800m range. The film will make money, that’s a given and that’s why this film shouldn’t be graded on its box office tally. TDKR should be graded on Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan’s script and Christopher’s direction.
Everyone in this film can act their asses off. Yes, including Anne Hathaway. When a director has such an excellent cast as Nolan does with TDKR, the pressure to get the best out of them falls on the writer directors shoulders. And we all know how good Christopher Nolan has been. As long as this film stands up to the first two in Bale’s and Nolan’s Batman Trilogy, it will be a success despite the fact that it will do half of what The Avengers does at the box office.
In the end, I expect TDKR to have character. That has always meant more to me than a persons bank account.
