New Images of Fanning as a Victorian Beauty in ‘Effie’

Written by Alexander Tucker   // 06/08/2012

FanningFour new images of Dakota Fanning as a young Victorian beauty in the period piece ‘Effie.’ She has played a impressive and diverse range of characters across different time periods but it appears that playing the Victorian bride suits Dakota Fanning.  The 17-year-old actress slips into the role of a 19th century beauty with ease, a style which is a far cry from her laid back everyday look. The star has been seen sporting several different period costumes shooting her new movie Effie in Venice, Italy.

For a while there last year, it looked like Emma Thompson‘s script for the film “Effie” was never going to reach production. The film is based on the true love affair between Victorian artist, architect, poet and political thinker John Ruskin and his wife, Effie Gray, and the mysterious circumstances over why their marriage was never consummated, leaving Effie a virgin until she remarried Ruskin’s protege, painter John Everett Millais.

I have to say, Dakota looks almost regal in her flowing slate-coloured skirt her, cream blouse over her corseted waist, and her fur stole around her shoulders.

Filmmaker Richard Laxton has to be  relieved, since Effie has been at the centre of some controversy in its long development life. It was gearing up to shoot last year with a cast in place, but was thrown into doubt when playwright Gregory Murphy sued for copyright infringement thanks to his stage take on the marriage, The Countess. But that’s now been sorted and the movie is going forward…
