New, Legendary TV Spot For Dredd

Written by Alexander Tucker   // 08/21/2012

Dredd TV Spot“I am the law.” Karl Urban’s Judge Dredd says in the opening of this new 30 second TV spot released by Lionsgate.

The TV-Spot sets the tone of the comic book that first gained fame in the 70′s. The world of Dredd is bleak, dangerous and desperate, and Judges are the only thing holding society together.

We also get a look at some the rather placid CGI. The CGI is reminiscent of Star Wars Episode One, before the remastered version — it reminds me of George Lucus’ experiential phase.

The clip also highlights the action that will come with Dredd 3D, and it looks like there will be a lot of it. Dredd seems almost super human, sparks and gun fire whiz by him and he doesn’t suffer a scratch. Which begs the question, will this film have an adequate villain that pushes Dredd to the brink or will this film be about Dredd taking down stupid hooligans like Jackie Chan did in his movies during the 80′s?

In DREDD, the future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets.  The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner.  Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation.  A heinous crime calls them to a neighbourhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan.  When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire.  With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

Dredd hits theaters September 7th in the UK and September 21st in the US. The film stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Deobia Oparei, Wood Harris, Jason Cope, and Domhnall Gleeson.

DREDD, is brought to life by writer Alex Garland (28 days later, Never Let Me Go) and director, Pete Travis (End Game, Vantage Point).
