New Stripping Clip From ‘Magic Mike’

Written by Alexander Tucker   // 06/01/2012

Magic MikeThis is a the first “It’s Raining Men” clip from Magic Mike, an upcoming drama film directed by Steven Soderbergh. The film stars Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, and Joe Manganiello.

In it, Veteran male stripper Magic Mike (Tatum) teaches a new male stripper (Pettyfer) about the occupation. They work at the club Xquisite, which is owned by the former male stripper Dallas (McConaughey).

Since Tatum actually used to be a male stripper, Soderbergh’s casting of him was a no brainer. But, I am surprised Channing Tatum took the role. Most actors want to put their embarrassing past behind them. In Magic Mike, Channing Tatum is putting it front and center. Every person who interviews him for the film will ask him about his past and I guess Tatum is going to embrace it. Good for him. It’s part of who he is.

Magic MikeI will be interested to see how this film does at the box office. Traditionally, movie’s made for woman starring guys don’t do well at the box office. Guys don’t want to take dates to see films like “Magic Mike,” who needs the caparison. And most straight guys won’t choose to go to the film together. When it comes to women, they tend to gravitate towards films geared to women, about women, i.e. Waiting to Exhale and The Devil Wars Prada.

That’s not to say Magic Mike won’t make money, it will, but don’t expect a summer smash. Of course the film only cost $5 million dollars to make, so it should be a financial success. Plus, with a film full of good looking men with their shirts off, you can count on the Internet and magazine doing most of the advertising. This film will be very easy to market. Soderbergh will release shirtless stills from production and Warner Brothers will watch them go viral.

Magic MikeI will say this about Director Steven Soderbergh, he’s a crafty Hollywood mover and shaker. Since Sex, Lies, and Video Tapes, he has but together a lot of fun, star filled films. The man has work with almost all of the top actors in Hollywood over the past ten years: Pitt, Clooney, Cheadle, Michael Douglas, Del Toro, Damon, Law, Fishburne, Cranston, Banderas, Fassbender, McGregor, Tatum, and you can go on and on with the next level of guys like Bill Paxton, Dennis Quaid, and Topher Grace. Even looking back on that list right now after I wrote it, I say WOW — That’s a lot of talent.
