Oz, The Great and Powerful

Oz, The Great and PowerfulAway we go. Here is the debut trailer from Sam Raimi’s ‘Oz, The Great and Powerful.’ The film, adapted from L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, is intended as a prequel to the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Or as Sam Raimi puts it, “It’s the story of who the wizard was and how he came to be the wizard we know.”

The magical looking film stars James Franco as Oscar Diggs, aka Oz, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Zach Bragg, and Bruce Campbell.

Does anyone else think this film will be a smash? Maybe its the kid in me, but I’m really excited about this movie. I think Sam Raimi is visionary director and he was perfect for this. If you don’t know, Raimi directed The Evil Dead trilogy and the first Spider-Man trilogy. If you watch those six movies you’ll know what I mean about Raimi. He’s a tone setter. In The Evil Dead trilogy and Spider-Man, he did things with special effects that we’ve never seen before. He is an ahead-of-the-curb director and when you think about the world of Oz, that’s exactly what we all want, something we’ve never seen before, something ahead-of-the-curb.

Here’s the synopsis: When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis),Evanora (Rachel Weisz), and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
