bieberSelena Gomez vs. Justin Bieber: ‘Pick Out the Immigrant’ for the Young C-Span Audience.

Yesterday in politics Representative Luis V. Gutierrez (D-IL) took the floor of the House of Representatives to play a little game of “Selena Gomez vs. Justin Bieber: Pick out the Immigrant” to prove a point that it is impossible for law enforcement officials to pick out the true immigrant in a photo lineup. He explained that the “show me the papers” law is a problem for all Americans who care about freedom. Representative Gutierrez used a lineup of famous celebrities, including Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, to show how tricky it is to play this game of pick out the immigrant based on looks alone. He used the following examples to prove this point:

1. Geraldo Rivera vs. Ted Koppel – In a traffic stop, to the untrained eye, we may assume that Geraldo Rivera is not from America. In fact, Geraldo Rivera was born in Brooklyn, New York, and Ted Koppel was born in England where his parents moved to flee from Hitler.

2. Selena Gomez vs. Justin Bieber – “These young people have overcome their very different national origins and (have) become a very happy couple.” Rep. Gutierrez jokes that Justin Bieber probably taught Selena Gomez to learn about his native country, America. It would appear to the untrained eye that Selena Gomez was the immigrant, but she was in fact born in Texas. Rep. Gutierrez reminds Justin Bieber that he had better bring his papers to Arizona the next time he is touring here since he was born in Canada.

3. Tony Parker vs. Jeremy Lin – “Clearly Jeremy Lin sounds kind of foreign, while Tony Parker sounds American.” But, in fact, Jeremy Lin was born in Los Angeles, and Tony Parker was born in Belgium. Gutierrez jokes, “but I’m not an Arizona police officer to know…”

Representative Luis V. Guitierrez summarizes the game as being “unfair, ridiculous and un-American.” In America people should be judged on their actions and not the way they look or talk according to Gutierrez.
