The Hobbit: A Box Office Record Breaking Journey
To no ones surprise, The Hobbit has stormed out of the gates with massive box office earnings. Though nothing is official yet, Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has two major records in its sights. The film is expected to shatter the biggest December Friday and biggest December weekend records.
Early projections have the film earning upwards of $38 million dollars on Friday and as much as $96 million over the weekend. Deadlines Nikki Finke has sources telling her the film may have earned closer to $40 million on Friday, and weekend earnings should be no less that $89 million. Its an extraordinary feat and those are monster numbers. With The Hobbits help, this may be the biggest box office December of all time.
The 3D adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s hobbit odyssey opened in 4,045 theaters. It’s the first of Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth ventures to open in 3D and that alone will push this film to financial heights that the first Lord of The Rings couldn’t imagine. The Fellowship of the Ring opened with $47.2 million dollars before going on to gross 313.3m in domestic receipts. The Hobbit will easily surpass that mark. The question is, by how much?
The Hobbit is also already, the #1 international film in the world. Some bullish insiders are even projecting a $200 million dollar worldwide opening. That would be massive! I’ll keep you all updated.
