Bourne Legacy pushed up a week to Aug. 10; Plus New Renner Images

The release of “The Bourne Legacy” was pushed up a week to Aug. 10 to avoid overlapping with the expected blockbuster opening of “The Dark Knight Rises,” Universal Pictures announced Friday.


The upcoming sequel, which sees Jeremy Renner replacing Matt Damon as the face of the franchise felt the film would have no breathing room, only a week apart from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, which is expected to be at least the second biggest movie of the year.


The move also works in the studio’s best interest because it allows for a full week more of advertising, which is precious because of the London Olympics (which will be broadcast by NBC which owned by the same company as Universal).


Universal said in their official statement on this change: “Just as The Avengers demonstrated marketplace sustainability that well outpaced traditional patterns earlier this summer, the industry expects a similar trajectory for The Dark Knight Rises. Moving one week further from its release will give The Bourne Legacyan even greater opportunity to maximize its opening box office potential.”


Deadline also reports that the delay has nothing to do with the film’s recent reshoots that just wrapped about a week ago.  It’s worth noting that reshoots on the previous films were commonplace and even a bit chaotic at times; they did fine, pulling in nearly a billion dollars at the box office.  Second unit director and stunt coordinator Dan Bradley downplays this as the reason for the delay, saying the reshoots were
