The Story Behind Diana Starring Naomi Watts
Princess Diana described her one true love, Dr. Hasnat Khan, as “Mr. Wonderful.” Although Diana’s love life and private affairs always seemed to be in the headlines, this was the chapter in her life that she was able to keep fairly private.
The new biopic “Diana” (originally titled “Caught in Flight”) will focus on the last two years of Princess Diana’s life, and more specifically on her close and intimate relationship with heart surgeon, Dr. Hasnat Khan. Some describe the film as being, “a love story between a princess (Diana) locked in a tower and an ordinary man (Hasnat Khan).”
The role of Princess Diana will be played by Naomi Watts (King Kong, Mulholland Dr.), and the role of Dr. Hasnat Khan will be played by Naveen Andrews (Lost, The English Patient). Jessica Chastain (The Help, Madagascar 3) was originally cast as Diana, but had to withdraw from the role due to a scheduling conflict.
Although the full synopsis of the biopic “Diana” has not been revealed, it is known that the film will focus heavily on her relationship with Dr. Khan. It is a biographical look at her life as told through her longtime bodyguard, Ken Wharfe. In addition to the two year relationship with Dr. Khan, “Diana” will also focus on the global humanitarian efforts of Diana. Film production locations include England, Croatia, and Mozambique.
Princess Diana met Dr. Hasnat Khan, a heart surgeon, while she was visiting a friend recovering from surgery at the Royal Brompton Hospital. Although they were deeply in love with one another, they were also very different from one another. Dr. Hasnat Khan was Muslim and did not feel that their relationship could last because of their differences. He broke up with her during the summer of 1997 and stated, “If I married her, our marriage would not last for more than a year. We are culturally so different from each other. She is from Venus and I am from Mars. If it ever happened, it would be like a marriage from two different planets.”
After her relationship with Dr. Hasnat Khan, Princess Diana began dating Dodi Fayed. Dodi Fayed and Princess Diana died in a car crash, and a friend close to Diana stated that Diana was still infatuated with Dr. Khan while dating Dodi Fayed. Her friend, Rosa Monckton, stated that Diana had no plans to marry Dodi Fayed.
Although Dr. Hasnat Khan received lucrative offers to write books or participate in interviews regarding his relationship with Princess Diana, he has refused to open up about the intimate details of their relationship. Dr. Khan states that he is a loyal man, and he is that way with everyone.
Some reports state that Diana was contemplating moving to Pakistan and/or converting to Muslim in order for the relationship to work. Diana was quoted as stating that moving to Pakistan was the, “only way he could see them having any sort of a normal life together”.
In May 2006 Dr. Khan married a young woman from Afghan Royalty. That relationship only lasted 18 months. He continues to stay mum on his relationship with Diana.
“Diana” is being produced by Oliver Hirschbiegel, the moviemaker behind the 2004 biopic on Adolf Hitler, “Downfall.” “Downfall” focused on the last 12 days of Adolph Hitler’s life as seen through the eyes of Hitler’s young secretary. Hirschbiegel’s “Downfall” was very controversial as it showed Adolf Hitler with very human like qualities, rather than being pure evil.
It will be interesting to see how Oliver Hirschbiegel portrays Princess Diana in “Diana,” and whether any controversy will surround the film.
“Diana” premieres in 2013 around the world.
