Viggo Mortensen in Play for New Dracula FIlm, ‘Demeter’

Viggo MortensenI love it! Bloody Disgusting have a cool piece of news today, revealing that Viggo Mortensen has been reportedly offered a role in the planned Dracula flick The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is an unusual project, as it spins a brief interlude in Bram Stoker’s Dracula — the voyage of the title character from Transylvania to England — into a feature-length thriller. The script has been kicking around for a while, and nearly got made a couple years back with David Slade directing and Noomi Rapace and Ben Kingsley in the lead roles. Actually, Jude Law was once up for the part, and incidentally Ben Kingsley is still attached. Now, it looks like Viggo Mortensen may be taking the lead.

The story centers on a ship called the Demeter that transported Dracula from Transylvania to England, but when the ship came ashore, it was broken down and nearly all of the passengers were murdered. In the Bram Stoker version of the story, there’s only one survivor. No word yet on whether Mortensen would play the lone survivor, or perhaps, in a sneaky bit of casting, Henry Clemens could be a fake name for Dracula and we could see the actor playing the world’s most famous vampire.

Stay tune to see what happens with Demeter this course be another rumor. The fact is, this project has been in development for ten years. WOW!
